I agree that the iTrip is harder to use than it should be - sometimes that damn LED just refuses to flash and stay on! But I've found the quality to be reasonable once you find the 'volume sweet spot'.
By that I mean that if you put the volume - on the iPod - to somewhere near 3/4 and then only adjust your receivers volume you'll find things will work out great.
If you have the volume too loud on the iPod it'll clip and sound horrid.
Mind you, it's still just FM so it's not ideal, and certainly no replacement for CD's. But it's adequate. Until you can afford to replace your car's head unit with one that accepts auxillary-in. :)
